Gwen will discuss the recent history of soil conservation practices on PEI and their role in building soil health, mitigating the effects of climate change and reducing the impacts of agricultural runoff to downstream ecosystems.
Gwen Corrigan Vessey began her career in 1980, as a soil & water conservation technician with the PEI Department of Agriculture. Over the next 37 years, Gwen continued working with the farming community on PEI on integrated erosion control systems, applied research projects on artificial wetlands, irrigation trials, residue management, alternative tillage methods for increasing runoff control and refining parameters for the RUSLE erosion prediction model on PEI.
Since retiring from the Department of Agriculture in 2017, Gwen has continued to work in the agri-environmental sector as coordinator of the PEI Agri-Watershed Partnership, an experience she credits with giving her a new perspective on agri-environmental issues on PEI.
Until her retirement, Gwen was a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) and is currently a Certified Crop Advisor and a Professional Agrologist. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Waterloo.
Board of Directors elections are an integral part of CAWGs Annual General Meeting. Each of our Directors are voted in at our AGM for a one-year term. This year our current Chairperson will not be seeking re-election, so we are actively seeking nominations for the position of Chairperson of the Board of Directors. If you or someone you know would be interested in volunteering on our Board, come out to the AGM to hear what it's all about! CAWG membership gives you the right to vote at the AGM, and members over 18 are eligible to join the Board.
